Solan
On 14th January 2025, the Civil Engineering Department (CED) of Jaypee University of Information Technology (JUIT) hosted a highly informative Familiarization Exercise (FAMEx) in collaboration with the 14th Battalion of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and District Disaster Management Authority, Solan. The event aimed to enhance disaster preparedness and response strategies among students, faculty, and staff.
The program began with Prof. Ashish Kumar, Head of the Civil Engineering Department, delivering an insightful opening address. He highlighted the importance of such initiatives in equipping stakeholders with critical skills for disaster response and resilience. He also extended gratitude to the District Collector (DC) Solan and Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Kandaghat for their pivotal role in initiating and supporting this program.
The Chief Guest, Brigadier R.K. Sharma, Registrar of JUIT and Dean of Students, shared his extensive experiences in disaster response during his tenure in the Indian Army. He lauded the efforts of CED and DDMA Solan in organizing the event, emphasizing its relevance for the university community.
Inspector Deepak from the 14th Battalion of NDRF, along with his team, led the session with engaging demonstrations on various disaster response techniques:
Earthquake Safety: Demonstrated the “Drop, Cover, and Hold” technique.
Fire Safety: Explained the PASS method for using fire extinguishers (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep).
First Aid Techniques: Covered handling internal and external bleeding, skull injuries, and techniques for extrication from rubble.
Stretcher Usage: Showed various types of stretchers, including homemade ones.
Lifting and Carrying: Demonstrated two-hand, three-hand, and four-hand carrying techniques.
CPR: Explained and demonstrated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for adults, children, and infants.
The session was attended by over 300 participants, including students, faculty, laboratory staff, and members from various departments such as security, housekeeping, sports, MES, fire safety, and electrical maintenance.
The two-hour program was highly impactful, providing hands-on learning and practical insights. It concluded with enthusiastic appreciation from the audience, marking it as a significant success for JUIT in its commitment to fostering a culture of safety and disaster readiness.
