Students test local water sources, linking science education with water conservation and climate awareness
Shimla: In a major step towards making school education more practical and environment-focused, Samagra Shiksha Himachal Pradesh has launched a water testing initiative in 2,662 schools across the state, where students are testing the quality of local water sources three times a year.
The initiative is part of the Jal and Climate Conservation Campaign, aimed at developing awareness among students about water quality, water conservation and climate protection. The results of the tests are being shared with the Jal Shakti Department and the concerned Sub-Divisional Magistrates, with appropriate action being taken wherever required.
Samagra Shiksha Himachal Pradesh has provided Field Test Kits (FTKs) to all 2,662 participating schools. One teacher from each school has also been trained in drinking water quality testing and the use of the kits.
The training and kit distribution programme was initiated under the leadership of Samagra Shiksha Director Rajesh Sharma through a Memorandum of Understanding between Samagra Shiksha, HPSES and the State Water and Sanitation Mission under the Jal Shakti Department.
Rajesh Sharma said the campaign was designed to go beyond teaching students the technical process of water testing.
“Through the Jal and Climate Conservation Campaign, students are not only learning how to test water quality but are also developing a sense of responsibility towards water conservation, the environment and climate,” he said.
“By using Field Test Kits themselves, children are connecting science with real-life situations. The initiative is in line with the experiential and practical learning approach envisaged under the National Education Policy 2020 and is an important step towards creating environmentally aware and responsible citizens.”
Science becomes hands-on learning
The water testing activity reflects the emphasis of the National Education Policy 2020 on experiential and skill-based learning. Instead of limiting students to classroom lessons and textbooks, the initiative allows them to apply scientific concepts in real-life situations.
Students are not merely learning about water quality in theory. They are conducting tests themselves, interpreting results and gaining practical exposure to scientific methods while thinking about environmental challenges affecting their communities.
The programme has turned science lessons into a form of hands-on learning, allowing students to understand how scientific knowledge can be used to address real-world problems.
Students join efforts to protect water sources
The campaign also goes beyond water testing. Volunteer groups of students and teachers are studying local water sources and working towards their conservation and rejuvenation with the support of environmental organisations.
Schools are also organising Jal Utsavs twice a year, involving Panchayati Raj institutions, the Health Department and other concerned departments.
Students are being engaged through poster-making competitions, essay writing and debates on water conservation and environmental protection.
By combining practical science education with community participation, the Jal and Climate Conservation Campaign is encouraging students to become more aware of the importance of protecting water, the environment and the climate.
The initiative marks a shift towards a more practical model of school education, where children are not just learning science in classrooms but using it to understand and protect the world around them.
