Shimla/Kinnaur, August 18
A former BJP leader was arrested in Kinnaur district after police allegedly recovered 7.78 grams of chitta (heroin) and ₹1.04 lakh in cash during a raid at a hotel in Spillo area of Pooh subdivision, according to reports.
The police action came as part of the ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking in the tribal district. During the search of the hotel premises, officers reportedly found the contraband along with the cash, following which the accused was taken into custody.
A case has been registered under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway to establish the source of the contraband and determine whether others were involved in the alleged drug network.
The arrest of a person associated with the BJP has also drawn attention amid the state’s intensified campaign against chitta trafficking. Police officials are expected to investigate the financial trail and other links connected with the case.
The accused will be produced before a court as per procedure. Further details are awaited from the police.
The accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.
