Shimla, August 31: Around 150 students from Government Excellence College, Sanjauli, and Law Studies Institute, Haridevi, Shimla, visited the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Monday and witnessed the proceedings of the seventh day of the Monsoon Session.
The students met Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania outside the Council Chamber at around 1:30 pm. During their interaction, they asked the Speaker questions about the parliamentary system, conduct of Assembly proceedings and his role in the House. Pathania responded to their queries in detail.
Addressing the electronic media after the interaction, the Speaker said it was encouraging to see young people taking an interest in the country’s constitutional and parliamentary system. He said India’s youth constitute around 40 per cent of the country’s population and today’s students are the leaders of tomorrow.
Pathania said students visiting the Assembly get an opportunity to see firsthand what they have studied in books. He added that students are being encouraged to witness Assembly proceedings so that they can better understand the parliamentary system, federal structure and democratic institutions.
The Speaker also recalled the Student Parliament organised in the Assembly, describing it as a successful initiative. He said students took on the roles of Chief Minister, ministers and Speaker and raised several important issues during the mock proceedings.
He said the way students discussed issues and attempted to find solutions through debate and dialogue was encouraging and would help strengthen democratic values among the younger generation.
