Shimla: Around 210 students from five educational institutions across Himachal Pradesh visited the State Legislative Assembly and interacted with Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania on Wednesday.
The students, from Government College Chuwari in Chamba, Government Senior Secondary School Spatu in Solan, and educational institutions in Tutikandi, Sanjauli and Baldeyan in Shimla, were briefed about the functioning of Parliament and the state legislature.
Pathania explained the country’s parliamentary and democratic systems, including the roles of the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and Legislative Assemblies. He said the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly are among the most important institutions of democracy.
The Speaker also told the students about the historical significance of the Assembly building, known as the Council Chamber. Construction of the building began in 1920 and was completed in 1925.
He highlighted several historic events associated with the building, including the election of Vithalbhai Patel as the first elected Speaker of the Central Legislative Assembly in 1925. Pathania said the House had also witnessed important developments related to India’s freedom movement and women’s voting rights.
The Speaker encouraged the students to watch the proceedings of the Assembly and gain a first-hand understanding of democratic institutions.
