Shimla, July 3: A report by the Himachal Pradesh unit of the National Health Mission (NHM) has revealed that 45 women conceived despite having undergone sterilisation procedures, raising concerns over the effectiveness of family planning surgeries in the state.
According to the report, the pregnancies were recorded after sterilisation operations that are intended to provide permanent contraception. Health experts note that while sterilisation is among the most effective birth control methods, no procedure offers a 100 per cent guarantee, and failures can occur in rare cases due to natural recanalisation or technical factors.
The findings have prompted calls for a review of sterilisation procedures, quality assurance measures, and post-operative counselling to ensure women are fully informed about the small but existing risk of pregnancy after surgery.
Health authorities are expected to examine the reported cases to determine the reasons behind the failures and assess whether additional safeguards or improvements in surgical practices are required.
