Rampur, May 17:
In a major political shift, BJP-supported candidates are set to take control of the Rampur Municipal Council for the first time after winning five out of nine wards in the civic body elections.
Traditionally considered a Congress stronghold, Rampur witnessed a significant breakthrough for the BJP as its backed candidates secured a clear majority, while Congress managed to win four seats.
BJP-supported councillors emerged victorious in Wards No. 2, 5, 6, 7 and 8, whereas Congress-backed candidates won Wards No. 1, 3, 4 and 9. The results marked the first instance since the formation of the Municipal Council that BJP-backed councillors have won a majority of seats in Rampur, where Congress had historically maintained dominance.
Counting of votes began at 5 pm and all nine ward results were declared within an hour. According to the results, Deepna Parshetka won from Ward No. 1, Rohit Negi from Ward No. 2, Jai Shree from Ward No. 3, Karan Sharma from Ward No. 4, Neetika from Ward No. 5, Uma Devi from Ward No. 6, Sundar Lal from Ward No. 7, Chandraprabha from Ward No. 8 and Visheshar Lal from Ward No. 9.
Ward No. 2 witnessed a major setback for Congress, while BJP’s strong contender Swati Bansal suffered defeat from Ward No. 4.
