Hamirpur: A 77-year-old doctor from Himachal Pradesh’s Hamirpur district has set an example of philanthropy by donating his movable and immovable assets, valued at more than Rs 80 crore, to the state government.
Dr Rajendra Kanwar, a resident of Jolaspad in Hamirpur, and his late wife Krishna Kanwar had decided in 2021 to bequeath their entire immovable property to the Himachal Pradesh government, according to the information shared by the family.
On August 5, Dr Kanwar executed a gift deed transferring the property to the state government. The land has subsequently been registered in the name of Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College and Hospital, Hamirpur.
Dr Kanwar said the property is self-acquired and that he wanted it to be used for the welfare of society, particularly for healthcare services for people in need.
He has also decided to donate his body after death. Meanwhile, movable assets belonging to him and his late wife are being given to close relatives through a gift deed.
Dr Kanwar expressed the wish that the government utilise his donated property to establish a charitable cancer centre or an old-age home. He said that whatever he and his wife had earned during their lives should ultimately serve society.
“Whatever I have received in life is meant for the service of society and humanity,” Dr Kanwar said.
His decision has been hailed as an example of compassion, social responsibility and selfless service, particularly at a time when charitable contributions can play an important role in strengthening public healthcare infrastructure.
