Shimla, June 5:
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Mahajan on Friday criticized the Chief Minister over his reported remarks concerning Zila Parishad and Block Development Committee (BDC) elections, alleging that the statement was disrespectful to elected representatives and the voters who elected them.
Addressing the media in Shimla, Mahajan said local self-government institutions, including Zila Parishads, BDCs and Panchayats, form the foundation of democracy and represent the aspirations of the people. He alleged that any attempt to diminish their significance amounts to disrespecting democratic values.
The BJP leader claimed that the Congress had suffered a setback in recent Zila Parishad elections and that the Chief Minister’s remarks reflected the party’s frustration over the electoral outcome. According to Mahajan, the results indicated growing public dissatisfaction with the state government.
He further alleged that instead of introspecting over the poll results, the Congress leadership was attempting to undermine the public mandate. He said democratic institutions and elected representatives deserved respect irrespective of political affiliations.
Commenting on recent political controversies surrounding religious slogans, Mahajan accused the Congress of repeatedly targeting issues linked to Hindu faith and Sanatan traditions. He said “Jai Shri Ram” represents the faith and devotion of millions and should not be viewed through a political lens.
Mahajan questioned why Congress leaders appeared uncomfortable with slogans associated with Lord Ram and alleged that such positions reflected an anti-Sanatan mindset. He maintained that Lord Ram occupies a central place in India’s cultural and civilizational heritage.
The BJP MP urged the Congress to respect democratic verdicts and refrain from making statements that, according to him, undermine elected institutions or hurt public sentiments. He also demanded that the Chief Minister publicly apologise for his remarks.
Mahajan said the BJP remains committed to protecting democratic values, cultural traditions and the sentiments of the people of Himachal Prades
