Due to a lack of facilities in the cardiology department of All India Institute of Medical Sciences Bilaspur, Dr Lakshmi Kumari Sankhyan, a cardiac surgeon, has resigned from his post as she has not performed a single operation in the last four years. The doctor had obtained a Master of Surgery (Super Specialization) degree in Cardiovascular Surgery from AIIMS New Delhi.
The specialist was appointed in the largest health institution of the state so that patients suffering from heart diseases with bypass operations, congenital heart defects (holes in the heart), heart valve operations, and lung cancer surgery get quality treatment within the state. For this purpose, he was included in the team of Cardiac Department of AIIMS Bilaspur in 2020. After 2020 until 2024 the specialist waited four years for the start of operations. She also tried to start a cardiothoracic surgical procedure at the institute but could not get the facility started due to a lack of adequate equipment and staff. At the same time, when the people could not get any benefit from the specialist’s degree, he resigned from his post. At present, the department runs only the OPD. The patient has been referred to PGI, Chandigarh.
Three specialists are working in the cardiology department of AIIMS. Specialists in the department have been providing services in the OPD for the last four years. A total of 520 patients were included in the study. The process of procuring equipment to start the surgery is underway. It is taking time to complete the process of equipment purchase.
