A 25-year-old woman from Himachal Pradesh, who was working as a professor at a private university, was found dead at her rented accommodation in Kharar, Punjab, on August 9. The deceased has been identified as Ankita Thakur, a resident of Bilaspur district.
Ankita was reportedly living with her cousin, Aditi, in a rented house in the Khuni Majra area of Kharar. According to the statement given to police by her brother Arun Kumar, Aditi had gone to the market around 6:30 pm to purchase some items while Ankita was alone in the room.
When Aditi returned about an hour later, the room was locked from inside. Despite knocking repeatedly, she received no response. She subsequently informed the landlord, and the door was opened with his help. Ankita was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf.
Police reached the spot after being informed and took the body into custody. No suicide note was reportedly found during the initial search. The police have also taken Ankita’s mobile phone for examination as part of the investigation.
Due to the lack of space at the Civil Hospital Kharar mortuary, the body was shifted to the mortuary at Civil Hospital Phase 6 in Mohali.
The family has reportedly not accused anyone of forcing or contributing to Ankita’s death. Based on the statement of her brother, police have initiated proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Further investigation is underway, including examination of the deceased’s mobile phone and other circumstances surrounding the incident.
