BILASPUR June 3
A group of Nihang Sikhs allegedly began collecting money from motorists under the banner of a “Khalsa Entry Tax” near the NHAI toll plaza at Mora village on the Himachal-Punjab border, leading to massive traffic congestion and long queues of vehicles on the national highway.
Led by Nihang Singh Achar Singh, the group stopped vehicles and sought what they described as voluntary contributions for “Sarbat da Bhala” (welfare of all). The resulting slowdown caused significant disruption for commuters and travelers.
Speaking at the spot, Achar Singh claimed that no one was being forced to pay and that no coercion or misconduct was involved. He said the donations collected would be used for religious and charitable purposes.
He further stated that the campaign would continue until the Himachal Pradesh government withdraws what he described as “heavy taxes and charges” imposed on people coming from Punjab.
Achar Singh also alleged that Punjabis visiting Himachal Pradesh were facing unfair treatment and discrimination by certain elements. He said the initiative was intended to highlight the grievances and concerns of Punjab residents and send a message to the Himachal government. “We have only shown a trailer to the Himachal government,” he remarked.
Following the incident, Rahul Sharma, Station House Officer (SHO) of Sri Kiratpur Sahib Police Station, reached the spot, assessed the situation and persuaded the Nihang group to discontinue the collection drive. The self-styled “Khalsa Toll Tax” operation was subsequently halted, bringing the situation under control.
