Nauni, August 15: The Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, celebrated the 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour and enthusiasm on Saturday.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Harminder Singh Bawa hoisted the national flag at the Dr LS Negi Auditorium complex in the presence of statutory officers, heads of departments, NCC officials, representatives of various employee associations, faculty members, staff and students.
The celebrations featured an impressive parade involving 97 NCC cadets, 32 NSS volunteers and 42 Scouts, besides a contingent of 22 university security personnel. Prof. Bawa inspected the parade and took the salute.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice-Chancellor extended Independence Day greetings to students, faculty and staff and paid tribute to the freedom fighters whose sacrifices and struggle paved the way for India’s independence.
He said India has emerged as one of the world’s major and fastest-growing economies and is making steady progress across sectors. Calling upon the youth to play an active role in nation-building, he urged students to become responsible and committed citizens.
“Freedom is not merely about enjoying rights; it also reminds us of our duties and responsibilities,” Prof. Bawa said, while urging students to uphold the country’s rich cultural heritage, democratic values, unity and integrity.
Highlighting the university’s achievements, he said the institution was continuously working for the welfare of the farming community through research, education and extension activities in agriculture, horticulture and forestry.
He also encouraged students to look beyond conventional boundaries and focus on developing new skills, innovation and entrepreneurship. He urged them to explore new ideas and adopt an entrepreneurial approach to create opportunities in the agriculture and horticulture sectors.
The celebrations concluded with a colourful cultural programme presented by university students. Solo songs and dances, group performances and a skit were among the highlights, drawing enthusiastic applause from the audience.
