The state government is committed to providing better and modern healthcare facilities to people living in remote areas. As part of this effort, modern healthcare infrastructure is being expanded in remote parts of the state, along with the deployment of doctors and other essential healthcare workers, enabling people to access quality treatment closer to home. In this regard, Civil Hospital Rohru is playing a vital role in providing improved and modern healthcare services to people in remote areas. The availability of a wide range of healthcare facilities at the hospital has reduced the need for residents to travel to Shimla for treatment and diagnostic tests, enabling them to access quality healthcare closer to home.
Hospital providing healthcare services round the clock: Dr Ravindra Sharma
Senior Medical Officer, Civil Hospital Rohru, Dr Ravindra Sharma, said the hospital provides emergency healthcare services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Civil Hospital Rohru caters to several areas of Shimla district as well as a population of more than 2 lakh in neighbouring Uttarakhand. The hospital has facilities for CT scans, X-rays and ultrasound examinations. He added that a 50-bed critical care block, an eight-bed SNCU and a four-bed day-care cancer unit are being established to further strengthen healthcare services for local residents.
Nearly 3 lakh people benefit from healthcare services
Civil Hospital Rohru provides healthcare services to residents of Rohru, Jubbal, Kotkhai, Chaupal and Dodra-Kwar, besides people from neighbouring Uttarakhand. The hospital caters to a population of approximately 3 lakh in the region. It has a total capacity of 200 beds, while an average of 800 to 1,000 patients visit the OPD every day. Around 120 to 130 patients receive inpatient treatment daily. The hospital also conducts an average of 100 to 120 major and minor surgeries and 110 to 115 deliveries every month.
Modern healthcare facilities available
Civil Hospital Rohru is equipped with CT scan, ultrasound, digital X-ray, blood bank and a high-dependency unit with ventilators. It also has fully equipped operation theatres for surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics and ophthalmology. Dialysis services are also available through Krsnaa Diagnostics, the hospital’s own laboratory and the Hans Foundation. The hospital currently has 22 doctors and 24 staff nurses and provides round-the-clock emergency services throughout the week.
Portable X-ray and ultrasound machines strengthen services
Portable ultrasound and X-ray machines at Civil Hospital Rohru are helping provide faster and more convenient diagnostic services to patients. Since the machines can be taken directly to patients when required, they are particularly useful in emergency and accident cases.
Examinations using the portable ultrasound machine have already begun. The machine, installed at a cost of approximately ₹6 lakh, was commissioned at the hospital on June 20. Five doctors have been authorised to operate the machine.
Meanwhile, a portable X-ray machine costing approximately ₹28 lakh is expected to become operational within the next three weeks. The required 6mm wiring and earthing work is being completed.
These facilities will enable patients to undergo essential diagnostic tests locally and receive timely treatment.
Four-bed day-care cancer unit to be established
A four-bed day-care cancer unit will soon be established at Civil Hospital Rohru, for which approval has already been granted. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared and a site has been identified. Construction is expected to begin soon.
Chemotherapy is currently being provided to cancer patients at the hospital. The establishment of a dedicated day-care cancer unit will provide patients with more specialised and convenient treatment facilities.
Six-bed dialysis centre providing free services
A six-bed dialysis centre, established with the support of the Hans Foundation, is functioning smoothly at Civil Hospital Rohru. The centre provides free dialysis services to patients.
The Hans Foundation provides doctors and trained staff for the facility, which has been operational for the past three years and has been benefiting patients in the region.
Around 12 patients undergo dialysis every day at the centre. One dialysis machine has been designated for HIV-positive and Hepatitis B patients to ensure they receive safe and appropriate dialysis services.
₹23-crore critical care block under construction
A 50-bed critical care block is being constructed at Civil Hospital Rohru at an estimated cost of ₹23 crore. Of this, approximately ₹17 crore has been earmarked for civil construction and ₹6 crore for medical equipment and machinery.
Construction work has already commenced, with around 15 per cent of the work completed. The project is targeted for completion within approximately two years.
The critical care block is expected to strengthen emergency healthcare services. It will include 20 beds for emergency patients, along with a labour room, two operation theatres, ICU beds, isolation wards, elevators, ramps, a heating system and duty rooms for doctors and other staff.
The block will also have a dedicated laboratory equipped with facilities required by microbiology staff, helping in the diagnosis of infections and other diseases and enabling patients to access necessary tests and treatment at the hospital itself.
16-slice CT scan machine to be installed
A dual-mode 16-slice CT scan machine will be installed at Civil Hospital Rohru following approval from the Himachal Pradesh government. The machine is expected to be installed within the next two months.The facility will enable faster and more accurate diagnosis of serious medical conditions. Its high-resolution imaging and improved reporting capabilities are expected to further strengthen diagnostic services for patients in the region.
50-unit blood bank functioning smoothly
A 50-unit blood bank is also functioning at Civil Hospital Rohru, ensuring timely availability of blood for emergency and other patients who require transfusions.With emergency cases being reported regularly, the blood bank is proving particularly useful in ensuring an uninterrupted and timely supply of blood to patients in need.
