The play named Popcorn was staged at St. Thomas’ School, Shimla today on 24-06-2024 by Sankalp Rangmandal Shimla in association with Department of Language and Culture, Himachal Pradesh. The Popcorn play (solo play) directed by Kedar Thakur. Anil Sharma was the protagonist of the play.
The play forces the audience to think that people of todays are only concerned about materialistic gains but no one has the time to think about becoming a good human being. From the popcorn seller’s eyes, the theatre lovers will witness the reality of our society. This play starts with a performance at the railway station. In which the hero of the play is the “popcorn seller”.
The whole play revolves around the popcorn seller and the way he has seen various aspects of society. He raises questions about the existing evils and the reasons for their prevalence.
Synopsis of the play:
The story begins with a popcorn seller who sells popcorn at the railway station. Every day he gives some popcorn to a mentally challenged woman named Tukia. One day, he finds out that Tukia was raped by a fruit seller whom he knows very well and wonders where this society is really heading.
When he finds out, he tries to reason why a mentally healthy person would rape a mentally ill woman and concludes that everyone is living to satisfy their greed and not their needs.
This play makes the audience think that in today’s time people only think about material gains, but no one has time to think about being a good human being. Only theatre lovers can understand the reality of our society from the popcorn seller’s point of view.
School Principal Vidhupriya Chakravarty said that such plays give a social message and today’s youth should learn from it. She also said that such social plays will be organized in school in future too.
