Tomato crop insurance deadline set for July 31; farmers urged to complete enrolment through Lok Mitra Centres or online portal
SOLAN: Farmers in Solan district have until July 15, 2026, to insure their maize and paddy crops under the revamped Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme, the Agriculture Department said on Tuesday.
Deputy Director of Agriculture Dr Dev Raj Kashyap said the deadline for tomato crop insurance has been fixed as July 31, 2026, and urged farmers to complete the enrolment process within the stipulated time to safeguard themselves against crop losses.
He said farmers can avail the insurance facility through their nearest Lok Mitra Centre or by applying online. Applicants will be required to submit documents including land records, Aadhaar card, bank passbook and a sowing certificate.
According to the department, the sum insured for maize and paddy has been fixed at ₹60,000 per hectare, while farmers will have to pay a premium of ₹96 per acre to insure these crops.
For tomato, the insured amount has been fixed at ₹2 lakh per hectare, with a premium of ₹800 per acre.
Dr Kashyap said the revamped scheme provides financial protection against crop losses caused by deficient rainfall, drought, floods, waterlogging, soil erosion, hailstorms and other localized natural calamities, including post-harvest losses occurring within two weeks of harvest.
He added that the scheme has been made optional for loanee farmers, allowing them to choose whether to participate.
The Deputy Director appealed to farmers to insure their maize, paddy and tomato crops to ensure they receive compensation from insurance companies in the event of crop damage. He advised farmers seeking further information to contact their nearest Agriculture Department office.
