Chandigarh June 19
In a major breakthrough in the sensational murder of Kumar Medical Store cashier Janki Das, Chandigarh Police has arrested the alleged mastermind and third shooter, Amit Kumar, from Samba in Jammu and Kashmir. Investigations have revealed that the assailants mistakenly targeted Janki Das after being given only a vague physical description of their intended victim.
Janki Das, a native of Rohru in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh, was working at the well-known Kumar Medical Store in Chandigarh. His wife was recently elected as the head of their village panchayat.
According to police sources, the shooters confessed during interrogation that they were never informed of the target’s name. Instead, they were instructed to eliminate a “heavily built man wearing spectacles” who sat at the counter of a Kumar Medical Store. They were also strictly told not to contact anyone near the crime scene to avoid detection.
Investigators revealed that on the day of the murder, the shooters first visited another Kumar Medical Store in Sector 11. However, due to heavy customer rush and the absence of a person matching the description, they left the location and proceeded to another branch.
At the second store, they spotted Janki Das standing at the counter. Believing him to be the intended target because his appearance matched the description provided, the assailants opened fire. According to forensic findings, multiple rounds were fired within seconds, giving the victim no chance to react before the attackers fled the scene.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Police recovered a cache of illegal weapons from Amit Kumar following his arrest in Samba. Senior Chandigarh Police officials said Amit was responsible for arranging weapons for the shooters.
Efforts are still underway to recover the pistol used in the murder. Joint interrogation of Amit Kumar and the two shooters arrested earlier in Jammu is continuing as investigators seek to identify the person who allegedly ordered the contract killing and uncover the full conspiracy behind the crime.
