Shimla
A 34-year-old woman was found hanging from a tree in an apple orchard in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla district on Friday, with police suspecting suicide based on preliminary investigations. The incident was reported from Madhana village under Nerwa police station limits.
According to police, the village panchayat pradhan informed Nerwa police that Geeta Devi, wife of Suresh Kumar and a resident of Madhana, had allegedly died by suicide after hanging herself from a buransh (rhododendron) tree. A police team reached the spot immediately and carried out an inspection.
During the investigation, the woman’s body was recovered from the orchard, while a rope was found hanging from the tree. Police said the only visible injury was a ligature mark around her neck, with no other external injuries detected. A search of the spot and the deceased’s residence did not yield any suicide note or suspicious material.
The body has been shifted to the Community Health Centre in Nerwa for post-mortem examination. Police have also informed the woman’s parental family, who have not expressed any suspicion regarding the death.
Officials said the case appears to be a suicide due to personal reasons at this stage. However, the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem report. Proceedings have been initiated under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and further investigation is underway.
