Ban on rallies, demonstrations, public meetings and sloganeering in designated areas of Shimla

Shimla: District Magistrate Shimla Anupam Kashyap has issued an order under Section 6 of the Punjab Security of State Act, 1953, to maintain law and order and public peace in Shimla city. According to the order, holding public meetings, taking out processions and rallies, staging demonstrations, raising slogans, playing bands, and carrying weapons or other articles that could be used as weapons have been prohibited in and around Mall Road and other designated areas. Prior permission from the competent authority will be mandatory for holding rallies, demonstrations, public meetings or playing bands in the notified areas. However, the restrictions will not apply to police, paramilitary forces or Army personnel while performing their official duties.

The order came into effect on October 1, 2026, and will remain in force until November 30, 2026. The restrictions will apply to Mall Road from Chhota Shimla to Kennedy House and the Ridge; the area extending 150 metres from Rendezvous Restaurant towards Rivoli Cinema; the stretch from Scandal Point to Kali Bari Temple; the link road from Chhota Shimla Gurudwara to the Chhota Shimla-Kasumpti Road; the road from Chhota Shimla Chowk via Raj Bhavan to Oak Over; the stairs and footpath leading towards Kasumpti Road from near Chhota Shimla Gurudwara; the link road from Cart Road to Majitha House; the road leading from the A.G. Office towards Cart Road; the road from the CPWD Office to the Wide Ground; and the area extending up to 50 metres from Police Gumti towards Lower Market, above the Deputy Commissioner’s Office.

The district administration has urged all concerned individuals and organisations to comply with the order to ensure public peace and maintain law and order in Shimla city. Any violation of the order will be punishable under the law.
