Shimla June 7
In a significant step towards making environmental education more practical, sustainable and action-oriented, the Himachal Pradesh government, in collaboration with UNESCO, has launched the Eco Club for Mission LiFE Activity Calendar 2026–27 for schools across the state.
The calendar aims to provide a structured framework for school students to participate in environment-focused activities throughout the academic year, fostering responsibility, leadership and sustainable lifestyle practices among young learners.
Released under the HP FUTURES initiative on the occasion of World Environment Day, the calendar aligns with the Government of India’s Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) campaign. It offers schools a year-round roadmap for activities such as tree plantation, waste management, water conservation, cleanliness drives and biodiversity protection.
Knowledge resources and policy documents unveiled
Alongside the activity calendar, several knowledge-based resources were also released, including the Himachal Pradesh State of Greening Education Report and a report on Competency-Based Education and 21st Century Skills.
Other key documents include the Green School Quality Standards for Himachal Pradesh, a Greening Education Toolkit for Eco Clubs, and six implementation-oriented working papers designed for various education stakeholders.
Officials said the resources reflect the state’s transition from evidence-based studies and reporting towards practical implementation aimed at creating future-ready, inclusive and climate-resilient schools. The initiative is aligned with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2023.
Focus on practical environmental learning
Samagra Shiksha Director Rajesh Sharma said the Eco Club for Mission LiFE Activity Calendar and the accompanying resources would make environmental education more experiential and impactful in schools.
He said the initiative would help inculcate environmental awareness, responsibility and sustainable lifestyle habits among students while strengthening a future-oriented education system in line with NEP 2020.
