A years of hard work, financial struggle and academic perseverance have culminated in a significant milestone for Dr. Kaku Ram Thakur, a native of Kota Pab village in Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district, who recently has been appointed as an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Satyawati College (Evening), University of Delhi.
Raised in a family dependent on farming and goat rearing, Thakur’s early years were marked by economic hardship. To support his education, he took up daily wage work, including carrying LPG cylinders, while continuing his studies. Despite the challenges, he remained focused on an academic career.
He completed his schooling at the Government School in Kota Pab and Bakras School before pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Solan. He later joined Himachal Pradesh University, where he completed his postgraduate studies and doctoral research in Political Science. Along the way, he qualified the UGC-NET examination six times, earned both the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Senior Research Fellowship (SRF), and completed his PhD.
His appointment to the University of Delhi marks the culmination of a journey that began in a remote hill village with limited resources but an unwavering commitment to education.
Back home, his parents continue to earn their livelihood through farming and livestock rearing. Thakur, however, remains closely connected to his roots and is known to spend time with his family and assist in agricultural work whenever he visits his village.
His story has resonated across Sirmaur and other parts of Himachal Pradesh, with many viewing it as an example of how perseverance and education can help overcome socio-economic barriers. For students from rural backgrounds, his journey serves as a reminder that determination and consistent effort can open doors to the country’s leading academic institutions.
