Shimla
After days of intense heat across Himachal Pradesh, the weather department has forecast relief with rain likely in several parts of the state from May 22 onwards.
According to the latest forecast, light to moderate rainfall is expected across low, mid and high hill regions on May 22 and 23, while higher reaches may also witness light snowfall.
The state has been reeling under severe heat over the past few days, with temperatures remaining above normal in both plains and hill districts. Una recorded temperatures touching 44 degrees Celsius, while regions including Shimla, Solan, Kangra, Mandi and Bilaspur have witnessed unusually high temperatures for May.
Scorching sunlight and hot winds have made it difficult for people to step outdoors during the day. Several districts have also revised school timings and morning assemblies to protect children from extreme heat conditions.
The Meteorological Centre in Shimla has issued an orange alert for thunderstorms and gusty winds blowing at speeds of 40 to 50 kmph in parts of Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi and Shimla.
Officials said maximum temperatures could dip by 3 to 6 degrees Celsius after the rainfall activity, bringing much-needed relief from the ongoing heatwave-like conditions. Experts have advised people to avoid direct sunlight during afternoon hours, stay hydrated and take special care of children and elderly persons.
