Shimla: Two one-month-old male cubs of the Himalayan Black Bear were rescued after being found abandoned in an orchard in Sandhu village near Matyana in the Theog subdivision of Shimla, forest officials said.

The cubs were first spotted by local residents, who alerted the Forest Department. Acting promptly, field staff reached the spot and safely retrieved the animals. Officials said efforts were made over two days to locate the mother and facilitate a reunion, but these attempts were unsuccessful.
Given their fragile condition and need for specialised care, the cubs were shifted to the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre at RRC Tutikandi. Upon arrival, veterinarians assessed the cubs as vulnerable, requiring intensive care and continuous monitoring.
At the centre, trained handlers are providing round-the-clock care, including hand-feeding with milk and nutritional supplements, maintaining hygiene, and ensuring warmth and comfort. Their health and behaviour are being closely monitored.
The RRC Tutikandi, functioning under the Shimla Wildlife Division, has played a significant role in rescuing and rehabilitating distressed wildlife. Officials said that in the past three years, nearly 350 animals have been rescued and treated at the facility. Depending on their recovery, animals are either released back into the wild or kept under long-term care.
The Forest Department commended the alertness of local residents in reporting the incident and assured that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the cubs’ healthy development.
