State of emergency declared after back-to-back quakes strike near the northern coast; hundreds injured and widespread damage reported.
Caracas, June 25:
Venezuela has been left reeling after two powerful earthquakes struck the country’s northern region within seconds of each other, triggering widespread destruction, panic, and a major emergency response operation.
According to official reports, at least 32 people have lost their lives and more than 700 others have been injured following the twin earthquakes that shook the South American nation on Wednesday. Authorities fear the casualty count could rise significantly as rescue teams continue to search damaged buildings and affected areas.
The first earthquake, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale, was followed just 40 seconds later by a stronger 7.5-magnitude tremor. The epicentre was reported near Venezuela’s northern coast, approximately 28 kilometres northwest of Montalbán, an area close to some of the country’s major oil refining facilities.
The powerful tremors were felt across large parts of the country, including the capital city of Caracas, where several buildings reportedly suffered severe damage. Residents rushed out of homes, offices and commercial establishments as the ground shook repeatedly, with many spending hours on streets and open spaces fearing further aftershocks.
The earthquakes also disrupted internet and communication services in several regions, complicating rescue and relief efforts. In response to the disaster, the Venezuelan government declared a state of emergency and mobilised disaster response agencies to assist affected communities.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that the 7.5-magnitude earthquake was preceded by a 7.2-magnitude foreshock. Despite the strength of the tremors, tsunami warning centres later cancelled initial alerts and confirmed that no significant tsunami threat remained for nearby Caribbean regions, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
Venezuelan authorities said emergency teams have been deployed to assess structural damage, provide medical assistance and search for survivors trapped under collapsed structures. Hospitals in affected areas have been placed on high alert to deal with the growing number of casualties.
Expressing solidarity with the people of Venezuela, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. He stated that India stands with Venezuela during this difficult time and is ready to extend all possible assistance if required.
As rescue operations continue, officials warn that the final toll could rise further as assessments are carried out in remote and heavily impacted areas.
