Shimla: In a step towards improving healthcare and rehabilitation inside prisons, 46 inmates at Kanda Jail will receive free prescription spectacles after vision impairments were detected during a refraction screening camp organised by the Rotary Club Shimla Hill Queens.
The eye screening camp, held on July 5, identified inmates requiring corrective eyewear. On Wednesday, the club handed over all 46 customised spectacles to the Kanda Jail authorities, who will distribute them to the beneficiaries.
Rotary Club Shimla Hill Queens President Harpreet Sembi said the initiative reflects the club’s commitment to community welfare and inclusive healthcare, ensuring that even those behind bars have access to essential medical support.
She acknowledged the contribution of Rotarian Vijay Lakshmi Sood for arranging the spectacles and said clear vision can significantly improve an individual’s health, learning ability, confidence and overall quality of life.
The club also thanked the Kanda Jail administration for its cooperation in successfully conducting the eye care initiative, describing the programme as a meaningful effort to restore not just eyesight but also dignity and hope among inmates.
