Shimla, May 15: In a unique gesture promoting women empowerment and social inclusion, 90-year-old Murtoo Devi from Sipur village inaugurated the two-day district-level Sipur Fair near Mashobra as the chief guest on Thursday.
Addressing the gathering, the elderly woman said true women empowerment means ensuring equal opportunities, freedom of expression and decision-making rights for women in society. She stressed that women today are becoming socially and economically stronger due to continuous efforts being made towards their empowerment.
The organisers said the fair has been organised continuously for the past 37 years with the support of the local committee. For the first time, the committee unanimously decided to invite the oldest woman of the area as the chief guest to send a strong message on women empowerment.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation in sports and cultural activities. Organisers said 18 teams have registered for volleyball, eight for men’s kabaddi and 10 for women’s kabaddi competitions. Matches commenced on the opening day itself.
Students from several schools including Government Senior Secondary School Mashobra, Bagthal School, Mulkoti School, Maya Public School, Model Education School and Sophia School presented colourful cultural performances during the fair.
A health camp set up by the Health Department provided free medical check-ups, diagnostic tests and medicines to visitors. Agriculture and horticulture departments also installed awareness stalls for farmers and orchardists.
Women self-help groups and local Mahila Mandals showcased traditional products and local food items, drawing large crowds at the fair venue.
A large number of villagers, youth mandal members, artists, schoolchildren and fair enthusiasts attended the inaugural ceremony.
