Bollywood actor Mushtaq Khan, known for his memorable supporting and comic roles in Hindi cinema, died on Thursday at the age of 56 following a prolonged battle with lung cancer.
The news was confirmed by Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) president BN Tiwari and All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) president Suresh Shyamlal Gupta. According to Gupta, Khan had been diagnosed with lung cancer around five years ago and had recovered after treatment. However, the disease reportedly relapsed about two weeks ago, following which he was admitted to Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai.
Tiwari said the actor had been unwell for several days and that efforts were underway to contact his family. His funeral is scheduled to be held on Friday at Yari Road Kabristan in Mumbai.
Four-Decade Career in Hindi Cinema
Mushtaq Khan made his screen debut with Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai in 1980 and went on to build a career spanning more than four decades. He became a familiar face in Hindi films through his supporting performances and distinctive comic timing.
He appeared in several popular films, including Aashiqui, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Raja, Hera Pheri, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, Jodi No. 1, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Welcome, Wanted and Oh My God!.
In recent years, Khan continued to work across generations, appearing in films such as Stree, Badhaai Do, Gadar 2, Stree 2, Vanvaas, Baby John, Dhoom Dhaam and Jaat. He also worked in television, including the popular show Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi.
Memorable Role in Welcome
One of Mushtaq Khan’s most remembered performances came in Anees Bazmee’s 2007 comedy Welcome. His comic monologue about a fake leg after an injury involving Uday Bhai became one of the film’s memorable sequences.
Khan also played Gul Khan in Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001) and reprised the role more than two decades later in Gadar 2 (2023).
His death marks the loss of a familiar supporting actor whose performances remained part of several generations of Hindi cinema.
