Shimla
An elderly woman was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her residence in the Rohru subdivision of Shimla district, triggering concern over rising crime incidents in the state capital region.
According to police, the woman, identified as Geeta Devi, a native of Janaratha in Mandi district, was living alone in a house located within an apple orchard. Her husband, Ami Chand, had passed away in 2020, and since then she had been residing by herself, while her two sons live with their families in different cities.
The incident came to light on Wednesday morning when orchard workers, reportedly Nepali labourers staying in a nearby shed, visited the house and received no response despite repeated calls. Sensing something was wrong, they entered the premises and found the woman lying unconscious inside the house. Police were immediately informed.
A police team rushed to the spot and began an investigation. Preliminary findings indicate signs of disturbance inside the house, with belongings found scattered. Injury marks were also reportedly visible on the victim’s body, leading investigators to suspect that the crime may have been committed during an attempted theft.
Officials, however, said the exact motive behind the killing remains unclear and all possible angles are being examined.
Given the seriousness of the case, a forensic team from Shimla was called to the scene to collect evidence and assist in the investigation. Police have also begun questioning local residents and workers in the area to gather clues.
The incident has sparked fear among residents, particularly as it comes within days of another murder case reported in the district. Locals have expressed concern over the safety of elderly people living alone in remote areas.
Police have registered a case and launched a search for the suspect(s). Senior officials said efforts are underway to identify those responsible and unravel the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
