Shimla, July 13: Inspector Vijay Kumar, the in-charge of the Himachal Police’s internationally acclaimed Harmony of the Pines orchestra, has been suspended following allegations of earning money through social media platforms.
The suspension was ordered by the Himachal Pradesh Police Headquarters, which has also initiated a departmental inquiry into the matter. Deputy Superintendent of Police (Police Lines), Kamal Kishore, has been appointed as the inquiry officer and has been directed to submit the report within three months.
According to sources, the action is linked to allegations that the officer monetised content on social media. However, police have not officially disclosed the exact grounds for the suspension.
Before the disciplinary action, Vijay Kumar was issued a show-cause notice by the Director General of Police’s office seeking details of his alleged private music albums, their publication and promotion, and whether he had obtained prior departmental permission for such activities. He was also asked to provide details of income generated through platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.
Police sources said Vijay Kumar submitted his written response on July 3, 2026. The departmental inquiry will now determine whether any service rules or departmental guidelines were violated.
Formed in 1996 to help police personnel cope with job-related stress, Harmony of the Pines has evolved into one of Himachal Pradesh Police’s most recognised cultural ensembles. The band has performed across India and abroad, including in Canada, Singapore, the United States and Dubai, and gained nationwide recognition after appearing on the television reality show Hunarbaaz.
