Shimla, June 14: The Nambardar Welfare Association of Junga Tehsil held a meeting at Janedghat on Sunday under the chairmanship of its president, Ram Krishan Rana. The meeting was attended by all serving nambardars of the tehsil, who collectively pledged their support to the campaign aimed at making Himachal Pradesh free from drug abuse.
Speaking on the occasion, Rana said the association would extend full cooperation to the administration and police in the state government’s ongoing anti-drug initiative. He noted that while the menace of chitta (heroin) has not significantly affected rural areas so far, there has been growing concern over the involvement of youth in various forms of substance abuse, including alcohol, charas, gutka, and tobacco.
To address the issue, the association plans to organize awareness meetings at the village level across the Junga region. These programmes will focus on educating young people about the harmful health effects of drug abuse and encouraging them to adopt a healthy lifestyle, thereby strengthening the foundation of a drug-free society.
Rana also urged the government to ensure that nambardars are involved in revenue-related matters within their respective areas. He said that local panchayats or other individuals should only be engaged when the concerned nambardar is unavailable. Highlighting the historical role of nambardars, he said they have been assisting the Revenue Department since the princely state era and continue to play an important role in administrative affairs.
He further appealed to the Revenue Department to involve nambardars in field-level revenue activities such as demarcation, land partition, and other related proceedings.
Expressing gratitude to the government for the annual increase in honorarium for nambardars, Rana said the move had boosted the morale of the community. Various organizational and public-interest issues were also discussed during the meeting.
