High-altitude lake in Lahaul and Spiti becomes accessible once again as authorities restore connectivity, bringing relief to tourism stakeholders and excitement to travellers.
Kaza/Lahaul & Spiti, May 30: One of Himachal Pradesh’s most enchanting tourist destinations has emerged from months of winter isolation. Chandertal Lake, popularly known as the “Moon Lake” of the Himalayas, has officially reopened for visitors, marking the beginning of another vibrant tourism season in the high-altitude desert of Spiti.
For nearly six months, heavy snowfall and extreme weather conditions kept the route inaccessible, transforming the region into a frozen wilderness. With road connectivity now restored, travellers, trekkers, photographers and adventure enthusiasts are once again preparing to make the journey to one of India’s most breathtaking alpine lakes.
Nestled at an altitude of over 4,200 metres, Chandertal is famed for its crescent-shaped shoreline, crystal-clear waters and dramatic mountain backdrop. Every summer, thousands of visitors travel through the rugged terrain of Lahaul and Spiti to witness the lake’s changing hues—from deep sapphire blue to emerald green—as sunlight dances across its surface.
The reopening has brought renewed optimism to local businesses, hotel owners, homestay operators, taxi drivers and tour guides, many of whom rely heavily on the short summer tourism window for their annual income. The return of tourists is expected to provide a significant economic boost to the region after a long winter shutdown.
Officials have advised visitors to travel responsibly and respect environmental regulations around the ecologically sensitive lake. Camping activities continue to be regulated to preserve the fragile Himalayan ecosystem and maintain the pristine beauty that has made Chandertal a global attraction.
Beyond tourism, Chandertal carries deep cultural significance. Local legends associated with the Mahabharata describe the lake as the place from where Yudhishthira ascended to heaven, adding a spiritual dimension to its natural grandeur.
The reopening of Chandertal also signals the revival of tourism activity across Spiti Valley, with destinations such as Key Monastery, Langza, Komic, Hikkim and Pin Valley expected to witness a surge in visitors in the coming weeks.
As snow melts and the roads reopen, Chandertal once again stands ready to welcome travellers seeking solitude, adventure and a glimpse of the raw, untouched beauty of the Himalayas.
