Shimla, June 1: A fresh controversy has erupted in Shimla after allegations surfaced against the Municipal Corporation (MC) over its ongoing drive against street vendors, with critics claiming that the campaign has put livelihoods and lives at risk.
According to statements issued by activists and employee representatives, a street vendor identified as Chandan is reportedly battling for life following an incident linked to the corporation’s anti-encroachment and tehbazari removal drive. The incident has triggered strong reactions from various sections, who accuse the civic body of adopting a heavy-handed approach.
Opponents of the drive also recalled an earlier incident in which a woman named Anjali allegedly suffered a fractured arm during a municipal action, raising concerns over the manner in which enforcement operations are being conducted.
The Municipal Corporation has further come under fire over its treatment of Safai Evam Health Branch (SEHB) employees. Employee groups allege that workers have been subjected to harassment through a 10 per cent salary deduction, withdrawal of 4-9-14 benefits, cuts in special leave provisions and the termination of 41 employees.
Critics described these actions as examples of “administrative authoritarianism” and called for greater accountability from the civic body. They argued that the burden of such measures is being borne largely by poor and middle-class residents of the city.
Calling for a united response, activists urged Shimla residents to mobilise in defence of their rights and strengthen public movements against what they termed arbitrary actions by the Municipal Corporation.
The Municipal Corporation has not yet issued an official response to the allegations.
