Shimla: Amid Himachal Pradesh Police’s zero-tolerance campaign against drugs, two separate cases of heroin (chitta) recovery in Shimla have once again raised serious concerns over the growing involvement of youth in drug abuse and trafficking.
In the first case, police arrested a young man and a woman from a private hotel in the Theog area after recovering three grams of chitta from their possession. According to police, a patrol team received specific information on Sunday evening that narcotics were being kept in a hotel room in Shali Bazaar. Acting swiftly, the police raided the hotel and searched the room.
During the search, police recovered three grams of heroin. The accused were identified as Jogender Vekta alias Dada and a woman accompanying him. Both have been booked under the NDPS Act, and further investigation is underway.
In another major operation, the Special Cell along with West Shimla police intercepted a car near the Tara Devi-Tutu bifurcation during naka checking. Police had received prior information that two men were travelling from Shoghi towards Shimla city carrying a large quantity of chitta.
During the search of the vehicle, police recovered 64 grams of heroin along with cash. The accused were identified as Karn, 35, a resident of Kalston in Theog, and Karn Verma, 30. Police suspect the consignment was meant to be supplied to local youth in and around Shimla.
Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Singh confirmed that cases under Sections 21 and 29 of the NDPS Act have been registered against the accused. He said the police are now investigating the source of the drugs and the network involved in the supply chain.
The SSP reiterated that the district police would not allow the drug trade to flourish under any circumstances and appealed to the public to immediately inform the police about any information related to drug trafficking or the sale of narcotics.
